Original Peace in Christ Umbrella Girl Painting by Jacob Secrest

***Special Collection***

“When I was 5, my folks recognized my interest in art and got me a little book about Monet, which is still one of my favorite books. They’d take me to art museums, enroll me in art classes, and buy me various supplies as my interests and knowledge changed. Over the years, they’ve collected many of my favorite paintings, including watercolors and some of what I consider my “Early Works” that I did around 2003-2004 when I was about 18-19 years old, before I went over 10 years without painting anything, and before I ever imagined being able to do art for a living.

Since my dad retired a few years ago, they’ve gone on a mission trip and travelled visiting grandkids, and they recently realized it may be a while before they settle in a permanent location. They decided they wanted to give these paintings back to me to sell since they didn’t want these paintings just sitting in storage without anyone being able to view and enjoy them.

I’ve had these pieces back for just a few weeks now and going through each of them has brought back so many great memories of the location in the painting, where I was when I painted it, or things I was experiencing at the time of each piece.”

The 2018 LDS youth theme is “Peace in Christ”. The LDS church made a wonderful music video of the title song of the 2018 Mutual album sung by McKenna Hixson. After seeing the music video and showing it to the young women in her ward, my mom asked if I would do an umbrella girl painting for her. Part of the video shows people out in the rain and a stranger comes up with a yellow umbrella and walks with them to symbolize (in my opinion) that we can all show Christ’s love through helping others. She wanted me to do an umbrella girl with a yellow umbrella to give each of the over 40 young women a print of it to remind them of the song and video and the message to get out and find someone to serve. I don’t typically do much with prints, but after seeing the video, I loved the message and idea of painting something that would remind these young women to help others. The world needs a lot more of this!

Although I really like how the first two paintings I recently did for this idea turned out, I think the dresses looked too fancy to portray the idea of finding opportunities to provide service. I decided to do a more casual look and this was the result! The original of one of the first 2 attempts is still available.

Watch the music video at www.lds.org/youth/theme/2018. It’s such a great message so that’s why I want to make this available to as many people as wants them! Please like, share, follow and message me!

Having suppressed painting for many years in pursuit of my education and supporting a young family, I have rekindled my love for art when I painted an “Umbrella Girl” painting for my daughter and saw the joy and excitement in her eyes.
